About The Initiative

The Southeast Pollinator Alliance was formed to establish an early-detection sentinel apiary network and provide opportunities for the local community to learn about honeybees through hands-on training in the apiary.

The Hornet Threat

The Yellow-Legged Hornet is an aggressive apex predator of honeybees. Unlike native species, these hornets utilize a hunting tactic called "hawking"—hovering right outside hive entrances to capture returning forager bees.

Sentinel Apiaries & Tech

Our first sentinel hives are stationed on Hutchinson Island along the Savannah River. Hives act as controlled lures, allowing teams to monitor hornet activity right at the entry corridor.
